|WHAT IS DTS?
A Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a six-month course, (12 weeks of lectures followed by 11 weeks of outreach), run by YWAM. In Uganda, the DTS is held at our bases in Jinja and also in Soroti. The focus of the school is:
'To Know God and Make Him Known'.
The goal of a DTS is to encourage committed Christians into a deeper and more personal relationship with the Lord, thus equipping them to serve Him in whatever capacity He calls them to. It is also an introduction to the values of YWAM and a chance to explore the opportunities we can offer you to develop your calling in missions.
THE LECTURE PHASE
The lecture phase is for the first 12 weeks of the school, and concentrates on enabling the student to get to know God better. It consists of teachings from a wide variety of international and local speakers, followed by small groups where issues raised can be discussed and questions can be asked. Daily work duties develop a servant heart and team spirit, and teach the student to "be faithful in the small things".
Students on the DTS come from both Africa and the rest of the world (Europe, America, etc..), so the students learn to live communally with others and build relationships with those from different backgrounds developing cross-cultural skills. You can expect a unique Ugandan flavor in teaching and the living/learning environment.
WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED?
- the character, ways & Word of God
- relationships with one another
- hearing God's voice
- the Father Heart of God
- gifts & ministries of the Holy Spirit
- prayer & intercession
- praise & worship
- spiritual warfare & dealing with the occult
- rejection, deliverance, healing, & forgiveness
However, the DTS is not about accumulating knowledge but about leading the students to develop their own individual daily walk with God and discover their unique gifts and ministry.
THE OUTREACH PHASE
This is a very challenging and exciting time, when the students get a chance to put their faith into action and get experience in strategic evangelism and missions. Unity grows as the team supports one another and lives closely together, often with local families. Flexibility and adaptability are necessary - as are patience and a good sense of humor! Students learn to completely rely on God as they see him at work in their own and other people's lives. In the past, some outreach teams have worked in refugee camps in Rwanda and Northern Uganda. Have served in Kenya and Tanzania. In Uganda past outreach teams have worked on bore holes and in hospitals in Soroti, evangelized in Karamoja, preached in the mountainous region of Kapchorwa. Students have also worked with the local church in Zanzibar.
AND AFTER DTS?
The DTS is the doorway to a future of working or further training with YWAM. It is the foundation on which the organization stands and so the school needs to be completed before taking further training with us. The DTS prepares people for missions, or to return to their vocation and home church better equipped to serve God and their community.
The fees structure of the DTS is as follows:
Students from Uganda: 300,000 USh
Students from developing nations: US $300
Students from the rest of the world: US $2,000
