The Aluwawe People of the Zambezi Delta
The Aluwawe number several thousand people who live in the swampy delta region of the Zambezi River. It takes three days by dugout canoe to reach them from Marromeu. They had no clinic, shops or school. We started with short visits to the area over a period of about five years, supporting the fledgling church and bringing some medical help, digging a borehole and starting a children's teaching program.

We now have the beginnings of a long-term presence there to meet the felt needs of this isolated people: which are education, clean water and health care. Two members of our team, Marta and Tiago have started a primary school in the local language of Sena and now the government has sent a teacher to work with them. Before this no one in Luwawe had any access to education at all. In 2007 we partnered with Mercy Air and Food For the Hungry to build a well which provides clean water for this community.

Marta’s husband Pedrito set up a small health post in Luwawe providing very basic health care with a limited amount of medications. Marta, Pedrito and Tiago are also involved in the young church there, encouraging and empowering local believers. (Marta and Pedrito are currently on extended leave in Marromeu.)
